Maricopa County
Maricopa County is a rapidly expanding county in central Arizona. The county had a 2010 census population of 3,817,117. The current estimated population is well over four million.
The county is named for the Piipaash people who the Spanish called Maricopa. The term is likely derived from the Pima word "Kokmalik'op" which means "enemies in the Big Mountains."
Arizona was carved from New Mexico which the United States gained after the Mexican/American War. The original state had only two counties: Yavapai and Pima. Maricopa was carved from Yavapai County. Pinal County was later carved from Maricopa and Pima County.
The county itself has largely turned into a wall to wall city and compromises the major part of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.
