Rural Metro Fire
Rural Metro Fire is an independent agency that provides fire protection services for unincorporated areas.
The company was founded by Lou Witzeman who watched a house burn down outside the Phoenix city limit in 1948. He created a subscription fire protection service which grew to other rural areas.1
The company held an IPO on NASDAQ in 1993 with the symbol RURL.
The company American Medical Response, which operates air and ground emergency medical services (ambulances and paramedics), acquired the firm in 2015.2 The private equity firm Kohlberg, Kravis and Roberts acquired AMR and merged it with other emergency response systems to create Global Medical Response.
